Temple of Football

Inaugurated on June 16, 1950, the Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho, the Maracanã, is known worldwide as the Temple of Football. A second home for every carioca, it has a history that transcends the limits of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil.

Host of two World Cup Finals, Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Olympic Games. Blessed by Pope John Paul II. Stage for concerts by Frank Sinatra, Tina Turner, Kiss and even Rock in Rio.

There are more than 70 years of many stories to tell.

By the way, in fact, almost 90 years. "Like this? Wasn't the Maracanã inaugurated in 1950?” Yes, but his destiny began to be written in 1938, when Jules Rimet, FIFA president at the time, visited Rio de Janeiro, with Brazil already campaigning to host the World Cup. Decision that was confirmed in 1946.
